Almost 200 students of medicine, emergency medicine, nursing, as well as physicians from all over Poland took part in the second edition of the PediCardia conference which was devoted to heart diseases in children. The central theme of the event was the concept of stress in the broadest sense – in emergency situations, diagnostics and therapy, perioperative and transplantation procedures.

was the 8th edition of this student-organized event. Its significance grows every year. A total of 700 participants registered this time. The topics of discussions included modern methods of diagnosis and therapy in cardiology.

The 22nd edition of the “Warsaw Nephrological Meetings” scientific and training conference has come to a close. The event was organized by the Chair and Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Internal Medicine at MUW. The theme of this year's symposium was “How do we treat patients in the 21st century?” This question was addressed by outstanding experts from Poland and abroad.

The lecture was organized by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) at WUM. The expert spoke about what multimodal treatment of the musculoskeletal system involves and concluded by sharing his experience regarding the residency application process in the United States.

An international team of experts, including Prof. Hanna Szajewska, head of the Department of Pediatrics at UCK WUM, has published a consensus in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology defining the concept of “gut health.”

A team from the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology performed one of the first implantations in Poland of a modern cardioverter-defibrillator with cardiac resynchronization therapy. The device enables physiological stimulation of the heart’s conduction system, a network of muscle cells responsible for generating and conducting electrical impulses and coordinating cardiac contractions. The procedure was performed on a 70-year-old man with severe heart failure of ischemic origin, who had also developed a conduction disorder (left bundle branch block) as a result of the disease.

Julia Klimanek, a university teacher and teaching assistant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Education MUW and a coordinating midwife at the St. Sophia's Specialist Hospital in Warsaw, was qualified to participate in the prestigious 24-month Midwife Leaders’ Executive Sponsorship Programme, organized by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). She was selected from candidates from many countries as the so-called "sponsee" of the second edition of the program.

Prof. Jakub Piwowarski, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Bioanalysis, has just received funding of PLN 4,986,198 from the National Science Centre (NCN) under the SONATA BIS competition for his project titled PsiloBiota. The project is based on the assumption that the fruiting bodies of mushrooms from the Psilocybe genus contain many previously undescribed substances that may influence the brain through the gut-microbiota-brain axis, a network of interactions between the intestines, microorganisms, and the nervous system that is important, among other things, for mood and cognitive functions.

The international meeting of the European Reference Network RARE-LIVER (ERN RARE-LIVER) is one of the most important events dedicated to rare liver diseases, bringing together experts from across Europe. It serves as a platform for exchanging experience and developing standards of care for patients. This year’s meeting, held in February in Prague, was attended by representatives of the Department of Hepatology, Transplantology and Internal Medicine of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw (UCK WUM).
