Vascular anastomosis (bypass) using a specialized simulator is a task that medical students participating in the 9th edition of the practical cardiac surgery course had to perform on their own.
Twelve MUW students were awarded rector's prizes for preparing or participating in the preparation of outstanding scientific works. Today, during a meeting of the University Senate, ten of them received congratulatory diplomas from the hands of the Rector - Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong.
Piotr Bromber, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Health, came to present the diploma to Mariusz Tomaniak, MD, PhD, from the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology. Our researcher received the Minister of Health award for the university teachers. The ceremony was held in the rectorate. Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of MUW, also took part in the event.
The tradition of meetings at Powązki Cemetery has continued since the death of Professor Zdzislaw Askanas, the founder and the first head of the 4th Department of Internal Medicine, currently the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology. Every year on January 17 the employees of the Department together with the invited guests lay flowers on the professor’s grave. This year, despite the snowstorm, they also went to the Powazki and the cemetery in Pyry. They laid flowers on the graves of Prof. Askanas and his students - Prof. Leszek Ceremużyński, Prof. Tadeusz Kraska and Prof. Jerzy Kuch.
The disease does not have to ruin dreams of medals. Dr. Piotr Lodzinski from the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology at UCC MUW has performed ablation procedures in many athletes with arrhythmias. This allowed them to continue their careers. Our specialist together with Paweł Balsam, MD, PhD, performed the ablation, among others, on wrestler Tomasz Michalik, who later returned to training and won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The surgery was performed on a 17-year-old patient with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic connective tissue disorder affecting one in 10,000 people. The procedure consisted of simultaneous correction of an aortic aneurysm, emphysematous bullae and funnel chest deformity. Performing these procedures simultaneously minimized the perioperative risk and number of complications and also significantly reduced the patient's total hospital stay. The boy was discharged home in good condition.
Can a person escape existential loneliness? What is love and what is a dream? MUW students and graduates from the Academic Magic Theatre try to answer these and other questions in their latest performance, inspired by the novels of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The premiere of the show took place last Friday "on the boards" of the ballroom of the legendary Medics Clubhouse. The show can also be seen on January 14 at 7 p.m. We are also planning to perform in February, which we will be sure to announce on our social media.
The construction of a modern Center for Medical Simulation (CSM) is one of the key investments of our University. CSM provides hands-on training in a setting that mirrors a hospital, outpatient clinic or ambulance. Students, trainees, and specialized medics - doctors, nurses, midwives, and paramedics - learn to perform basic and complex invasive procedures in a safe environment. The center is particularly useful in the first stages of medical training prior to activities with patients, and provides an opportunity to hone skills related to the treatment of less common conditions.
An extremely difficult procedure involved removal of a cystic kidney with prior transplantation of that organ from a living donor. Due to this innovative procedure, the patient avoided dialysis. Both the transplant patient and his brother, who donated the kidney, are feeling very well and have already been discharged home.
The 13th edition of the HELPERS' GENERATION project has come to an end. It was attended by 65 universities from all over Poland. Among them, MUW turned out to be the number one - we managed to register the largest number of potential bone marrow donors.
