Julia Osiecka - a student of nursing at MUW, has won the sixth Polish edition of the Queen Silvia Nursing Award. The judging panel recognized her idea to improve the health of dementia patients through the use of modern VR technology. The idea is that through virtual reality, seniors will be able to experience the activities they did when they were young and in the prime of life.
Vaccination
People in Poland have changed their attitude towards vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 virus. And this is definitely a positive change - according to a joint study by the Medical University of Warsaw, the University of Warsaw and the research agency ARC Rynek i Opinia.
How do you feel, the 31st Nobel Session
How do you feel? is the title of a lecture by Ardem Patapoutian, a molecular biologist - winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. The second scientist to receive this award was physiologist David Julius. They were recognized for their discovery of temperature and touch receptors. The question of how we experience tactile stimuli was also the focus of the 31st Nobel Session at MUW.
Stop illegal medicines and medical devices
Psychotropic drugs have been the most commonly counterfeited in the last two years. The criminals also offered illegal masks, tests and medicines for COVID-19, and even vaccines. The latter, for €3 billion for 400 million doses, was even proposed to the European Commission! Experts discussed how counterfeiters work and what to do to defend against them during the International Scientific and Training Conference.
Vernissage on the occasion of 200 years of the Warsaw Medical Society
Established on 6 December 1820 on the initiative of a group of professors from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Warsaw, the Warsaw Medical Society has for over 200 years pursued its chief motto - to serve people and homeland. To celebrate this two-century anniversary, a ceremony was held within the walls of our university to commemorate the activities of the Society and its founders, including Professor August Ferdinand Wolff.
Rozgłos - the only platform in Poland that popularizes knowledge about the human voice
- Rozgłos draws attention to our voice. How to take care of it, how to improve its condition, increase its flexibility so that we can express everything we want to – says the project initiator Ewelina Sielska-Badurek, MD, PhD, from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw, an audiologist and phoniatrist, MA in solo singing. - Platform users can find their own voice, the one they feel most comfortable with, whether they sing or not - she adds.
Doctor-patient communication
For many years, this was an underappreciated topic. However, a lot has changed recently. There is a growing body of research on the role of communication in medical practice. Communication skills training programs are being developed. The importance of this was discussed by experts at the 5th National Scientific Conference "Communication in Medicine."
Two decades of scientific activity in public and environmental health
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Department of the Prevention of Environmental Hazard, Allergology and Immunology MUW, a scientific symposium on "Public and Environmental Health in MUW Research" was held on December 2. The event brought together many distinguished guests currently and formerly associated with the department.

There are 26,486 people infected with HIV in Poland. The National AIDS Center reported 943 new cases in 2020. - The data are underestimated, and the most disturbing fact is that in our country half of the patients are diagnosed with HIV infection at a late stage - points out Prof. Alicja Wiercińska-Drapało, head of the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases and Hepatology MUW. - For this to change, testing needs to become more widespread. This is the only way to detect the infection at an early stage, when we have many options for effective treatment - adds our expert.
Special award of the Rector of the MUW for the paper on the effects of tobacco smoke on lung immune response
The "Golden Cuckoo" (Złota Kukułka) - a special award of the Rector of the MUW for the works most frequently cited in the world literature - went to Agnieszka Strzelak, MD, from the Department of Pediatric Respiratory Diseases and Allergology, UCC MUW. According to the Web of Science database, the distinguished dissertation entitled "Tobacco Smoke Induces and Alters Immune Responses in the Lung Triggering Inflammation, Allergy, Asthma and Other Lung Diseases: A Mechanistic Review" was cited 108 times. Co-authors of the paper are: Aleksandra Ratajczak, Aleksander Adamiec and Wojciech Feleszko, MD, PhD, from the Department of Pediatric Respiratory Diseases and Allergology, UCC MUW.
