Description

On behalf of the Museum of the History of Medicine of the Medical University of Warsaw and the honorable speaker – dr hab. n. med. Tomasz Dzieciatkowski, we are honored to cordially invite you to an open lecture entitled “Viruses and epidemics – a trending topic”. It will be the first in a series of ten lectures carried out as part of the project “Learn the secrets of the human body in the anatomical theater of the 21st century”.

Viral infections are an important field of infectious disease. In recent years, the emergence of new, hitherto unknown viruses (eg MERS or Denga) has continued to appear. At the same time, new epidemiological threats are noted due to the spread of viruses in regions where they have not been observed so far, or only on a small scale (e.g. Ebola virus or Zika virus). However, only the appearance of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and the COVID-19 pandemic last year in China stirred the interest of the general public in the subject of the epidemic and pandemic. The invisible enemies – viruses are once again on the lips of all people around the globe.

Dr hab. n. med. Tomasz Dzieciatkowski is a virologist, microbiologist and laboratory diagnostician. On daily basis, he works as an assistant professor at Department of Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Warsaw and as an assistant at the Department of Microbiology at the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw. He is the author of over 100 works indexed in PubMed, devoted mainly to the issue of viral infections. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered his desire to popularize virological knowledge via social media: FB – Tomasz Dziecistkowski – Trust me I’m a Virologist.
