Minimally invasive and highly precise pulmonary valve implantation procedures in children

A team of interventional cardiologists from the Children’s Clinical Hospital of the University Clinical Center of WUM has successfully performed additional percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation procedures. The interventions were carried out on two pediatric patients with severe pulmonary valve regurgitation who had previously undergone cardiac surgery.

Both children were discharged from the hospital in very good condition just a few days after the procedure.

From the femoral vein to the heart

The procedures involved implanting a modern biological valve through the femoral vein and precisely positioning it in place of the damaged pulmonary valve.
Thanks to advanced imaging technologies and highly specialized equipment, the physicians were able to carry out the procedures in a minimally invasive and exceptionally precise manner, avoiding the need for traditional open-heart surgery.
These interventions represent an important step toward further expanding the use of modern treatment methods for heart disease in children.

Modern treatment tailored to the youngest patients

The development of minimally invasive techniques in cardiology significantly improves the patients’ prognosis and quality of life.

“This is a major step forward for young patients, especially those who have already undergone heart surgery and require additional interventions,” said Dr. Krzysztof Godlewski, Head of the Hemodynamic Laboratory at the Children’s Clinical Hospital of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw. “Thanks to this method, we can avoid reopening the chest, while also reducing hospitalization time and accelerating recovery.”

The first procedure of this kind at the Medical University of Warsaw was performed on April 15, 2026.
