The event was hosted by Jarosław Prugar, Vice Chancellor for Management at WUM and the main topic was security, which constitutes the foundation of the functioning of each university. The participants of the forum emphasized that it was difficult to talk about high-quality education without a sense of security for students and staff.
New technologies in the service of the university
During the forum, a number of solutions used to increase the level of security on academic campuses were presented. Hanna Panwic-Friebe, Key Account Manager at Samsung Electronics Poland, and Mariusz Łopaciński, the Director of the Administrative Division of the Kozminski University discussed modern security systems.
Hanna Panwic-Friebe highlighted the possibilities offered by modern technologies, including solutions that used artificial intelligence. At the same time, she emphasized the importance of the system operator whose task is to activate appropriate procedures in the event of an emergency. By integrating individual components of infrastructure, it is possible to quickly disseminate information to the entire academic community via monitors in teaching rooms, information screens or outdoor totems. This enables immediate notification of a threat or the indication of emergency escape routes.
How to respond effectively to threats?
One of the solutions Mariusz Łopaciński presented was the operation of Help Points, i.e., spots where you can call for immediate assistance. Starting such a help point automatically turns on the cameras located in its vicinity, establishes a connection with the security system operator and sends an alarm signal to the appropriate services.
The expert emphasized that although modern technologies significantly supported security, people remained an indispensable element of the entire system. At the same time, the human factor might turn out to be the weakest link.
From monitoring to education of the academic community
Dariusz Kruziewicz, the Head of the Security Office at WUM, discussed the challenges related to ensuring security at a medical university. He emphasized that an effective system should be based on the early detection of threats, efficient decision-making, effective communication and the responsibility of the entire academic community.
He paid particular attention to educating students, faculty and administrative staff in this regard. It is crucial not only to identify a potential threat, but also to know how to proceed in a crisis situation.
Forum participants could also test their skills in practice. Dariusz Kruziewicz prepared a series of scenarios based on real-life situations occurring at universities. The participants were supposed to indicate the right course of action in the specified circumstances.
Campus of the Future facing climate challenges
Apart from security, the sustainable development of the university was also discussed during the forum. The participants agreed that the Campus of the Future should be a space supporting the health, well-being of the academic community and resilience to the effects of climate change.
Medical universities share experiences
The forum was attended by representatives of nine medical universities: Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, Medical University of Lublin, Medical University in Białystok, Medical University of Silesia, Medical University of Gdańsk, Karol Marcinkowski Medical University in Poznań, Jagiellonian University – Collegium Medicum, Center of Postgraduate Medical Education and Medical University of Łódź.
