“This year’s ranking clearly shows the variety of topics that Medical University of Warsaw (WUM) student research groups explore, and how they combine clinical perspectives and basic research. Moreover, all of the highest-rated research groups are characterized by member commitment, ideas for further development of the SRG, and the support of their academic supervisors. These high ratings are usually a result of months of work, not just isolated achievements,” said Kamila Krupa, Head of the Student Research Association at WUM.
A ranking in order to motivate, not only to compare
Although this SRG list is a ranking, it aims not only to compare the achievements of individual SRGs, but—primarily—to demonstrate good practices and show appreciation for students’ research activities. The results of the ranking may be also an incentive for other SRGs to more energetically promote students’ involvement in research.
“The purpose of the ranking was to show our appreciation for supervisors and members of SRGs and demonstrate to other students how many possibilities of research development being actively engaged in SRG activities offers. I hope that this ranking will also be an incentive for new initiatives and collaboration between groups,” said Kamila Krupa, Head of the Student Research Association, WUM.
This ranking is based on reports on SRG activities submitted to the Student Research Association and the Office for the Organization of Education and Student Affairs. Points are awarded for SRG activities, which includes taking into consideration the number of meetings in the given academic year; obtained grants; papers in scientific journals; published monographs, books, or book chapters; studies presented at research conferences (including any relevant awards); organizing a research conference; organizing workshops; organizing research and training camps; and active participation in organizing the Warsaw International Medical Congress for Young Scientists (WIMC).
SRG – the beginning of a career and a space for developing student interests
Being actively engaged in a SRG is often the first step towards a career in science – it offers opportunities to take part in advanced research and to present the results in Polish and international conferences. It also helps students focus on the field they are really interested in, so it may be a great way to find a respite from daily studying and pursue one’s own passions.
