Although breastfeeding is often described as the most natural way of feeding a baby, it does not take place in a social vacuum. As Prof. Aleksandra Wesołowska of the Medical University of Warsaw points out, successful breastfeeding should not depend solely on a mother’s determination, but also on the knowledge of healthcare professionals, the organization of care and support at the system level.
Effective lactation support must also be inseparably linked to science on human milk. For the past ten years, this mission has been carried out by the Laboratory of Human Milk and Lactation Research at WUM – the first centre of its kind in Poland to combine laboratory research with clinical practice, supporting, for example, the development of human milk banks and protecting parents from commercial misinformation.
