12th National Student Radiology Forum

Another edition of the National Student Radiology Forum (SOFoR) is now behind us. For the twelfth time, this conference brought together young radiology enthusiasts from across Poland. The event was attended by students and physicians associated with radiology, nuclear medicine, radiography, and medical physics.

The conference took place on March 14 at the Didactic Center of the Medical University of Warsaw (WUM). It was organized, as in previous years, by the Student Scientific Society “X-RAY” at the 2nd Department of Clinical Radiology of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw. It opened with a lecture by Prof. Andrzej Urbanik titled “The Pioneering Years of Polish Radiology.” The topic was particularly timely, as November 2025 marked the 130th anniversary of the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Röntgen, considered the symbolic beginning of modern radiology.

The program also included a lecture by Dr. hab. Krzysztof Pyra titled “Interventional Radiology in Gynecology: Precision, Effectiveness, Safety,” devoted to interventional radiology, which is a fascinating yet still relatively little-known field that is rapidly gaining importance in modern medicine.

Scientific sessions

Participants in the symposium had the opportunity to present their work in two sessions: original research and clinical case reports. In total, 19 scientific presentations were delivered and evaluated by distinguished experts serving on the Scientific Committee. The committee included Prof. Magdalena Januszewicz, head of the 2nd Department of Clinical Radiology at the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw (UCK WUM), where the “X-RAY” Student Scientific Society operates, as well as Dr. hab. Małgorzata Kobylecka, Dr. hab. Krzysztof Pyra, and Dr. Maria Teresa Płazińska.

Among all presentations, the following were awarded:

  • First place in the original research session: “Effectiveness and safety of treatment of iatrogenic arteriovenous fistulas” by Miłosz Czerwaty (WUM)
  • First place in the clinical case session: “Hilar lung mass in a patient after lung and kidney transplantation – lymphoma or infection? Diagnostic pitfalls in imaging of immunosuppressed patients” by Michał Zieliński (WUM)

Hands-on workshops

Hands-on workshops were an integral part of the conference. Interventional radiology workshops were particularly popular. They allowed participants not only to expand their knowledge but, above all, to try their hand at procedures such as thrombectomy simulations and the treatment of renal artery aneurysms. This is a unique initiative on a national scale.

The POCUS ultrasound workshops, led by Zofia Koźlicka and Jakub Piwoński from the Hokus Pocus team, were also exceptional. They stood out for their high academic value and accessible teaching format, demonstrating that learning ultrasonography can be both effective and rewarding.

This year’s edition of the conference was held under the honorary patronage of Prof. Rafał Krenke, Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw, and Adam Struzik, Marshal of the Mazovian Voivodeship.
The next edition of the Forum will take place next year!

“This year, SOFoR was attended by over 160 participants. This clearly shows the strong interest in radiology among students,” emphasized Julia Krawczyk, Chair of the “X-RAY” Student Scientific Society.
