WUM – number one among Polish medical universities
In the “Health Sciences” category (which includes the following disciplines: “Dentistry”, “Medicine”, “Nursing”, “Health Professions”, “Veterinary”), our university, cooperating with 807 partners from 73 countries, obtained 85.3 points and took the first place among Polish medical universities. WUM thus surpassed the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University (82.1), Karol Marcinkowski Medical University in Poznań (75.1) and Medical University in Łódź (72.9). The next places were taken by medical colleges of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn.
WUM also performed well in the “Life Sciences” category (which includes the disciplines: “Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology”, “Neuroscience”, “Immunology and Microbiology”, “Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics”, “Agricultural and Biological Sciences”), ranking 5th among 21 national universities classified in this category.
Among the leading international partnerships
WUM took the highest position in the “Dentistry” discipline (68 partnerships from 32 countries), ranking 259th among 650 universities in the world. “Medicine” ranked right below (721 partnerships from 71 countries). It was the 311th among 1,195 universities, and “Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy” (34 partnerships from 15 countries), was classified 380th among 844 universities. According to the ranking, it is these disciplines at WUM that constitute the foundation for developing research partnerships.
Good results in health sciences and biomedicine
We also perform well in the following disciplines: “Nursing”, “Health Professions” and “Immunology and Microbiology”. We occupy places in the first half of the list, which indicates a high level of activity and potential for further development and strengthening of research partnerships.
In the “Health Professions” discipline (156 partnerships from 46 countries) we occupy the 423rd place among 1,175 universities, while in “Nursing” (181 partnerships from 32 countries) – the 427th place among 960 universities. As regards “Immunology and Microbiology” (130 partnerships from 33 countries), we were ranked 512th among 1,076 universities.
WUM connects research centers around the world
Notably, WUM excels in the area of network intermediation, diversity of partner countries and international activities. According to the ranking, 86 out of 95 leading partners (91%) are unique entities, which means that WUM effectively connects research environments that would not have had an opportunity to establish cooperation without the participation of our university.
The Research Collaboration Index was developed using open global scientific resources (CC0), verified funding data from the European Commission (CORDIS), the Crossref Funder Registry and national research funding institutions. The authors of the ranking analyzed research funds worth USD 6.1 trillion, 19 million grants, 35 million scientific publications and over 90,000 links between universities. They assessed such factors as the scale and sustainability of scientific partnerships, internationalization of cooperation, co-authorship of publications and activity in the implementation of joint research projects.
