WUM and Łukasiewicz Research Network – Prof. Ignacy Mościcki Industrial Chemistry Institute

The most interesting scientific questions arise at the intersection of different fields. Our university has just signed a research cooperation agreement with the Industrial Chemistry Institute, the aim of which is to identify bioactive compounds produced by selected species of intestinal bacteria and determine their biological properties.

On behalf of WUM, the research will be conducted by scientists from the Chair and Department of Medical Microbiology, with Dr Anna Majewska as the coordinator,  while on the part of the Institute – scientists from the Section of Genetic Engineering and Biosynthesis under the supervision of Dr Jolanta Janiszewska.

Why is it important to study selected intestinal bacterial species?

The scientists will investigate whether bioactive compounds produced by these intestinal bacteria inhibit the multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms and whether they prevent the formation of biofilm (a complex multicellular structure formed by microorganisms).

A better understanding of these compounds may help us understand their role in maintaining the body's homeostasis and supporting the proper functioning of the microbiota.

“At this stage, these are primarily basic studies. However, they may determine the directions of further research on the potential use of metabolites of intestinal bacteria, for example in the development of functional food or solutions to support prevention and treatment,” emphasized Dr Anna Majewska from the Chair and Department of Medical Microbiology WUM.

Initial research analyses were already conducted in the department as part of the Young Researcher project (supervisor: Kinga Markowska-Michalak). Modern equipment purchased with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan was used for this purpose.

Power of partnership in research

“Cooperation with the Industrial Chemistry Institute means sharing knowledge, research expertise and good practices. Science is a team game, and the best results are achieved together,” added Dr hab. Anna Majewska.
