Women’s Day at WUM

“WUM Supports Women” was the theme of this year’s Women’s Day celebration at the Medical University of Warsaw. The university’s Didactic Center was truly crowded throughout the event, which is not surprising given the wide range of attractions available. Participants could prepare a healthy meal, take part in a yoga session, undergo basic health screenings, design a tote bag and a commemorative pin, or practice pelvic floor exercises, all in the spirit of promoting health and well-being.

The guests were welcomed by Prof. Rafał Krenke, Rector of WUM; Dr. hab. Patryk Rzońca, Vice Dean in charge of the Faculty of Health Sciences; and the main organizers, Dr. hab. Beata Sińska, Head of the Department of Human Nutrition at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Dr. hab. Grażyna Bączek, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Education at the same Faculty. The Rector expressed hope that the event would become a regular initiative and eventually expand into a project for the local district and the wider city community. Dr. hab. Beata Sińska presented the activities planned at the various booths, especially encouraging participants to try the blender bike, a combination of a stationary bicycle and a blender that allows users to prepare a smoothie from their favorite fruits while pedaling.

The event attracted great interest among both staff and students of WUM. Among the guests were also Vice Rectors Prof. Dorota Olczak-Kowalczyk, Vice Rector for Personnel and Organizational Affairs, and Prof. Agnieszka Cudnoch-Jędrzejewska, Vice Rector for Clinical Affairs and Investments.

The most popular attractions of the Women’s Day event were body composition analysis (organized by the Department of Clinical Dietetics) and the “Bowl Full of Health” station (prepared by the Department of Human Nutrition and the Student Research Group in Human Nutrition), where participants could assemble a healthy, nutritionally balanced meal. These stations attracted the longest lines.

A special booth was also prepared by midwives from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Education, together with members of the Student Research Group of Midwives. It featured training mannequins on which participants could practice breast self-examination, learn step by step how a Pap smear test is performed, and practice pelvic floor muscle exercises.
At the Medical Center booth, participants could have their blood glucose levels checked and blood pressure measured, while in the creativity zone, they painted tote bags with the event slogan. Those interested could also join a yoga session led by Alina Stasiak, a yoga instructor and senior specialist at the WUM Office of Communication and Promotion.

The event was accompanied by an exhibition by Małgorzata Lisowska titled “History Written in the Body in Three Acts.” It featured microscopic images of the artist’s own cancer tissue after sixteen rounds of chemotherapy as well as images of healthy breast cells.
