Important distinction
As emphasized by Marzena Kowalczyk, the Director of UCC WUM, the accreditation means much more than a formal distinction.
“An accreditation certificate is not just a souvenir that we can hang on the wall, but the highest distinction awarded to hospitals in the Polish healthcare system.”
The process of intensive preparation for accreditation took over two years and covered all areas of the activity of the University Clinical Center, which includes: Central Clinical Hospital, Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital and Pediatric Teaching Clinical Hospital. During these two years, over 7,100 employees were trained and involved in accreditation-related activities, and the hospital implemented and monitored 221 quality standards.
The Director recalled the scale of UCC WUM activities. In 2025, the hospital carried out over 152,000 hospitalizations, over 467,000 outpatient consultations, and over 37,000 surgical procedures, including over 700 organ transplants. It was at the UCC that breakthrough pioneering procedures were performed, including cardiac autotransplantation in a patient of several months, the world's first chimeric liver transplant or the implantation of a bioresorbable PFO (patent foramen ovale) occluder.
Confirmation of the highest standards
In his speech, Prof. Rafał Krenke, the Rector of WUM, emphasized that the certificate was a formal confirmation of the quality of care provided by the University Clinical Center.
“This certificate constitutes formal proof that the procedures performed at our hospital and the quality of patient care are at the highest level,” said the Rector.Professor Krenke thanked the management, heads of units and all employees for their consistency and great commitment necessary to carry out the accreditation process.
“The enormous work has been successfully completed. Heartfelt thanks and congratulations. I extend them not only to the management and administrative staff, but also to all heads and managers of units and team members,” emphasized the Rector.
Success based on teamwork
During the ceremony, the accreditation certificate was presented by Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda, the Minister of Health, who drew attention to the extremely difficult nature of the accreditation process in large, consolidated medical organizations.
“This certificate is a confirmation that you are already very good in many areas. It is also provides guidance on where it is still worth improving a little, and what still can be refined,” said the Minister of Health.
Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda congratulated all professional groups working at the hospital, emphasizing that the success was possible thanks to the cooperation of the entire team.
“You wouldn't have achieved such results if it wasn't for teamwork,” she said.
Referring to the functioning of the healthcare system, she compared the activities of the UCC to a well-cooperating orchestra.
“I wish you many beautiful concerts,” she said, handing over the accreditation certificate to the authorities of the UCC WUM.
Accreditation as a commitment for the future
The accreditation obtained does not end the pro-quality activities. As announced by the Director, Marzena Kowalczyk, the UCC is already implementing further projects to continue the digitization of documentation, implementation of electronic document management and strengthening measures in the field of epidemiology and prevention of hospital infections.
