The smallest heart transplanted in the UCK WUM. A five-month-old patient is recovering.

In the Pediatric Teaching Clinical Hospital, University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw, a team of cardiac surgeons led by Prof. Mariusz Kuśmierczyk, the Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation, recently performed a heart transplant in a five-month-old infant. This is the smallest heart transplant ever performed at our hospital.

As emphasized by Dr Michał Buczyński, the Deputy Head of the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, UCC WUM, such an operation is a unique technical and organizational challenge for the entire team. The transplanted heart was the size of a newborn's fist, so surgery on this scale required microscopic accuracy and precision. The small patient is recovering under the loving, professional care of the whole team and the parents.
