A series of events devoted to ultrasound imaging in critical conditions has come to an end

The event was organized by the 2nd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care UCK WUM. First, there was a five-day intensive training course on emergency ultrasound, followed by Europe's first international training course on transcranial ultrasound in intensive care. Both courses attracted participants and lecturers from many countries.

And they confirm that our university is becoming one of the leading centers of education and research in the field of point-of-care ultrasound in anesthesiology and intensive care.

ESICM NEXT GenIUS training program

The training took place from October 13–17, 2025, and covered clinical, educational, and scientific areas. Thirty residents and young specialists from around the world—members of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) participating in the ESICM NEXT GenIUS Fellowship program—took part in the program. The 2nd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care UCK WUM was selected by ESICM as one of seven co-organizers of this prestigious event, alongside King’s College Hospital (London), Charité (Berlin), and the University of Pisa, among others. This is a great honor and an expression of confidence in the quality of our department’s activities.

International training course in transcranial ultrasound

On October 17 and 18, a course entitled “Point-of-Care Transcranial Ultrasonography (TCCD) in Intensive Care” took place at the Medical Simulation Center WUM. The lecturers and instructors included Dr. Adrian Wong, MD, Consultant at King's College Hospital, London, Dr. Masumi Tanaka, MD, Consultant in Neurocritical Care at King's College Hospital, London, Agata Andrzejewska, MD, specialist in anesthesiology and intensive care, affiliated with the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, and a team from the 2nd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care UCK WUM: Mateusz Zawadka, MD, PhD, and Dr. Krystian Sporysz-Janiec.

The course was preceded by a lecture entitled “Neurocritical Care Monitoring in the ICU: The Role of Transcranial Doppler (TCD)” by Magdalena Kasprowicz, PhD, Eng., professor at the university, Head of the BrainLab Neuroengineering Laboratory (Wrocław University of Science and Technology), and a renowned expert in the field of biomedical engineering and neuromonitoring.

An important step in the development of ultrasound education in intensive care

- The ESICM NEXT GenIUS Fellowship was an excellent opportunity to exchange clinical experiences, establish scientific cooperation, and share practices that are already commonplace in our department but are only just beginning to develop in other centers, explains Mateusz Zawadka, MD, PhD, from the 2nd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care UCK WUM, chairman of the Ultrasonography and Echocardiography Section of the Polish Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, initiator and coordinator of both events.  - Transcranial ultrasonography, on the other hand, is increasingly becoming the standard in anesthesiology and intensive care units, which is confirmed by recommendations from the scientific community. Unfortunately, there is still a shortage of places that offer training in this field, mainly due to the limited number of competent instructors. Hence the idea to join forces with other centers and organize joint international training.
