Prestigious Award for a Scientist from WUM

Piotr Kaszczewski from the Chair and Department of General, Vascular, Endocrine, and Transplant Surgery at WUM, headed by Prof. Zbigniew Gałązka, has been awarded the Professor Zdzisław Boroń Prize for the best habilitation thesis in the field of ultrasonography, defended in 2024–2025.

The Professor Zdzisław Boroń Prize is a prestigious distinction awarded by the Polish Ultrasound Society (PTU). It is cyclically granted to authors of the best scientific works (doctoral or postdoctoral/habilitation theses) in the field of ultrasonography that make a significant contribution to the development of this area of medicine.

Dr. hab. Piotr Kaszczewski received the award during EUROSON 2026 – the 36th Congress of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology – from Prof. Anna Drelich-Zbroia, President of the Polish Society of Ultrasonography, and Prof. Vito Cantisani, President of the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB).

The awarded habilitation dissertation, titled “Volume flow measurements in extracranial arteries as an innovative tool for assessing carotid artery stenosis and predicting the hemodynamic benefits of surgical treatment,” consists of a series of five scientific publications describing a new approach to diagnosing carotid artery stenosis based on volume flow measurements in extracranial vessels.

Research conducted at the Chair and Department of General, Vascular, Endocrine, and Transplant Surgery at WUM demonstrated that based on volume flow measurements in the carotid and vertebral arteries  arteries supplying the brain, it is possible to identify patients at higher risk of developing symptoms of central nervous system ischemia and to predict the hemodynamic benefit of revascularization treatment.

Dr. hab. Kaszczewski’s research has been distinguished once again by the Polish Society of Ultrasonography. In 2021, he received the Professor Zdzisław Boroń Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of ultrasonography defended in the years 2016–2021. His doctoral dissertation was supervised by Prof. Zbigniew Gałązka.
