Pediatric dentistry at WUM

Dentists, specialists, academic lecturers, and researchers gathered at the 3rd International Scientific and Training Conference on Pediatric Dentistry to exchange knowledge and experience. This year’s lectures were delivered by guests from countries such as Australia, Sweden, Spain, Germany, and Croatia.

The event lasted two days (September 28–29). During that time, participants could attend eight lectures and take part in one of nine workshops. The conference was opened by Prof. Dorota Olczak-Kowalczyk, Vice-Rector for Personnel and Organizational Affairs at WUM and President of the Polish Society of Pediatric Dentistry. In her speech, she discussed the “10 by 10” challenges, a series of initiatives aimed at reducing the prevalence and severity of dental caries in Poland.

“I am pleased to announce that we will establish the Professor Urszula Kaczmarek Award. We will launch a nationwide competition for the best idea for a preventive, educational, or combined preventive-educational initiative,” said Prof. Olczak-Kowalczyk. “We invite everyone to take part. In this way, we want to honor the memory of Professor Urszula Kaczmarek, who was a dear colleague and deeply committed to eliminating dental caries in Poland.”

Lecture sessions

The lecture sessions began with Prof. Paul V. Abbott from The University of Western Australia, who explained when it is too late to replant an avulsed tooth. He presented research results highlighting that even dentists may have doubts in such situations. Should the tooth be replanted at all? What should be done after replantation? What type of splint should be used? The expert addressed these and other questions, providing many practical recommendations. Prof. Abbott also delivered another lecture titled “When is root canal treatment indicated after dental trauma?”

Other international speakers also delivered highly specialized and engaging lectures. Prof. Lars Andersson from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Malmö University, Sweden, presented “Tooth ankylosis after replantation – how to understand and manage this complication.” Prof. Cesar de Gregorio from Madrid, Spain, discussed the challenges of traumatology in pediatric dentistry.

Another international guest, Prof. Ivana Miletić from the Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry, School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb, Croatia, addressed the topic of comprehensive restorative rehabilitation using the MI method.

Dr. Johannes Loddenkemper from Hannover, Germany, presented a lecture on new tools used in endodontics.
Polish experts also participated in the lecture session. Prof. Elżbieta Dembowska from the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin discussed gingival and periodontal diseases in children and adolescents, while Dr. Adrianna Adamek-Mrozowska from the Medical University of Łódź spoke about modern minimally invasive endodontics.

Workshops and poster session

The workshops attracted considerable interest from conference participants. Many focused on practical issues, such as repair of primary teeth on a model for stainless steel and zirconia crowns using rotary instruments, restorations with composite injection techniques, and practical applications of new technologies in contemporary endodontics.
Another workshop focused on communication: “When words heal – how to talk with a child and a parent in a dental office.”

The event was organized by: the Polish Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the Regional Medical Chamber in Warsaw, the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of WUM, the Pediatric Section of the Polish Dental Society, and the Committee for Dentists of the Regional Medical Council in Warsaw.
