Our specialists spoke about transplantation at the European Parliament forum

Prof. Michał Grąt and Prof. Roman Danielewicz took part in a conference addressing issues related to international cooperation and the legal conditions governing the procurement and transplantation of organs and tissues. The conference took place on November 18 in Brussels.

During the conference, titled “The lifesaving potential and challenges of organ transplantation in the EU,” Prof. Michał Grąt, Vice Rector for Internationalization, Promotion, and Development, Head of the Chair and Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery at UCK WUM  (University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw), and Poland’s national consultant in transplantology, spoke about how to create an effective liver transplantation program. Prof. Roman Danielewicz from the Chair and Department of General and Transplant Surgery at UCK WUM, Chair of the National Transplantation Council, who participated in the event online, presented the current legal situation regarding organ transplantation in the European Union. 

The conference also featured presentations by Dr. Anna Pszenny, Head of the International Cooperation Department at POLTRANSPLANT, and Prof. Tomasz Szczepański, Rector of the Medical University of Silesia. Opening remarks were delivered by Ignazio Roberto Marino, Member of the European Parliament, and Stefaan van der Spiegel from the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission.

The conference in Brussels was organized by the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases and Adam Jarubas, Member of the European Parliament. The conference coincided with the opening of the exhibition “The Power of Existence,” prepared by students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice in cooperation with the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases. The event was part of the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the first successful heart transplantation in Poland.
