Ceremony to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees

This year, 165 people received doctoral degrees at our university. This is over 40 more than the year before. The number of postdoctoral dissertations has also increased. This year there were 39 of them.

The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Piotr Pruszczyk, Vice Rector for Science and Technology Transfer. In his speech, he stressed that our university is a very good place for scientific research. We are currently implementing more than 340 projects financed from external sources for more than PLN 650 million. The professor also recalled the results of the last evaluation, as a result of which all our scientific disciplines received a very high A category.

Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector, also spoke about the high scientific position of MUW. - You have contributed significantly to this success. As of today, we are the best medical university in our country and the 7th university among higher education institutions in Poland. This is the highest place our university has ever held - the Rector concluded.

Distribution of diplomas

After the speeches, the awarding of diplomas began. First, from the hands of Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong and Prof. Piotr Pruszczyk and the chairmen of the disciplinary councils, the postdoctoral students received their diplomas. 30 researchers in the discipline of medical sciences, 8 in the discipline of health sciences and one researcher in the discipline of pharmaceutical sciences. 
The Vice Rector then read out the contents of the solemn doctoral oath. Among other things, the newly-appointed pledged to support the university and develop themselves academically, conducting research for the general good rather than material gain.
After the words of oath, the Rector together with the Vice Rector handed out diplomas to doctoral candidates. In the discipline of medical sciences, 107 people received doctoral degrees (including 49 with distinction). In the discipline of pharmaceutical sciences - 16 (including 11 with distinction). In the discipline of health sciences - 42 (including 20 with distinction).

Speeches and acknowledgements

There was also time for speeches by the heroes of the ceremony. Magdalena Skarżynska, MD, PhD, representative of the postdoctoral students, spoke about what scientific work is for her: - Scientific work, is taking risks, making hypotheses, carefully observing the results and drawing conclusions, which in turn lead to proposing new theories. And theories allow us to look at what we already knew in a different way. Scientific work is also a teamwork.

Dr. Emilia Wnuk, representative of the doctoral students, focused her speech on acknowledgements. - I would like to thank the promoters and assistant promoters, as well as my colleagues on the research teams who have led us, supported us and helped us in our scientific journey. Chairmen, vice-chairmen, members of discipline councils, as well as reviewers and university authorities. I would also like to thank those closest to us who supported future doctoral students.

The ceremony ended with a performance by the MUW choir under the direction of Daniel Synowiec.

Also present were thesis supervisors and assistant supervisors, as well as the families of the graduates.
