Matriculation at the Faculty of Medicine under the unofficial patronage of Albert Einstein

During the ceremony, important words were said about what the medicine is and what the meaning of a doctor's work is. Speakers quoted scientists, writers, poets - Albert Einstein was cited most often. All this was done so that the students, who are just beginning their first year, better understand and feel the path they are about to embark on with their solemn oath.

This year, 852 students were admitted to the Faculty of Medicine. 536 - for full-time studies in Polish, 160 - for full-time studies in English and 156 for part-time studies in Polish. Almost all of them showed up at the Prof. Janusz Piekarczyk auditorium of the Didactic Center MUW on October 7. And they were the most important heroes of the matriculation.

The ceremony was conducted by Prof. Rafal Krenke, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. In his speech, he emphasized, among other things, the special features of academic training. - It takes place in conjunction with scientific research, the purpose of which is to deepen the knowledge. Knowledge has its limits (...). And you, during your studies, are just approaching these limits. Albert Einstein was aware of the limits of knowledge, perversely claiming that "imagination is more important than knowledge, because knowledge is limited in contrast to the latter." As knowledge is limited, it is difficult for us to find a clear answer to some questions - we only have more or less likely hypotheses. We should get used to this and understand that the search for and discovery of truth is one of the most important tasks of the university. - Prof. Krenke said.

Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of MUW, also addressed the first-year students.
- Today you are beginning an extremely important stage in your lives, perhaps even the most important (...) I would like to tell you about the university of which you are becoming members. And if you leave it as graduates, you will leave with a diploma from the university, which is recognized around the world and is a passport that opens a great many doors. Although we hope that you will stay with us and here you will use the knowledge and skills you acquired during your studies (...) You will be educated in the best medical institutions in Poland. The best specialists work here, and the most complicated procedures are performed here - the Rector noted.

After the Rector's speech, the most important part of the ceremony - the oath - began. The oath was taken by Łukasz Koperski, MD, PhD, Vice Dean for Student Affairs of the I and II year, from the students of the Polish-language medical field. And from the students of the English-language medical field -  Jacek Sieńko, MD, PhD,  Vice Dean for English Division.

A very interesting inaugural lecture entitled. "What's in the grass? Natural substances in medicine" was delivered by Professor Dagmara Mirowska-Guzel from the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology. The professor cited the history of marijuana, artemisinin, and morphine, substances that are still seeking or have already found their place in medicine. Her speech also included wishes for students. - The history of our profession, the history of medicine, the history of pharmacotherapy is a mixture of awe, inspiration, idealism, rationalism, audacity and humility, but also sincere interest and determination. I wish you all these qualities a little bit at a time - said Prof. Mirowska-Guzel.

Matriculation was until recently associated with the ceremony of handing new students paper indexes. Today, there are no more traditional indexes, but to make tradition a reality, the Rector, the Vice Rectors as well as the Dean and Vice Deans of the Faculty of Medicine presented all first-year students with badges with the logo of the Faculty of Medicine.

Finally, the floor was given to the presidents of the Student Government.
- As Albert Einstein said, "if a concept is not crazy from the very beginning, there is no hope for it." I believe in the words of the genius and assure you that there is hope for you, because the concept of studying medicine contains a bit of madness - argued half-jokingly half-seriously Karolina Marrodan-Wojtczak, chairwoman of the Student Government of the Faculty of Medicine.
The ceremony ended with a mini-concert by the MUW Choir, conducted by Daniel Synowiec. One could listen to the real hits such as "Shallow", "No time to die" and "The Final Countdown".
