Our bull’s eye, the representation of MUW with a silver medal

Second place in the World University Archery Championship is a great success for our student Kamila Naploszek. The competition was fierce and fought until the final bow.

The championship were held on 23 September in Legnica. Competitors shot at a distance of 70 m at targets with a diameter of 122 cm (the centre has a diameter of a CD). This is the same as in other competitions, including the Olympic Games. No handicaps. Our athlete competed against 34 other persons, the representatives of 31 universities.

– The archery competition is carried out in a manner involving preliminary qualifications. I ranked third at the qualification – says Kamila Naploszek. She says that the elimination “levels” are designed on the basis of qualification results. The person who ranked the highest competes with the person who ranked lowest, etc. Players line up in pairs for duels. They are played out in sets. – 3 arrows are shot. The higher series involves two set points, a draw is one point each and a loss is zero. Each round is played until the score of 6. In the case of a 5:5 situation, the players take one shot each – whoever shoots closer to the centre wins.

The competition saw great athletes, such as Sylwia Zyzanska, a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, and Magdalena Smialkowska, a national team representative. – I competed against the former in the semi-finals and the latter in the finals. I lost the finals by inches, in overtime by one shot. Well, archery sometimes takes a little bit of luck – our medallist summarises.

Kamila Naploszek is studying at the Faculty of Health Sciences, majoring in public health, specialising in healthcare management. She is currently in her second year of studies. She has been coaching archery for 15 years and has long been on the national team. This year, she represented our country at the European Championships.
