Self-defense course for MUW students. The police officers from Legionowo provided training

Last Saturday, May 7, MUW students intensively practiced dodging, lifting, grabbing, punching and kicking. All this in a self-defense and safety workshop. It was organized by IFMSA-Poland Warsaw Branch in order to develop self-confidence and basic defensive reflexes in students. The course was conducted by police officers from the Police Training Center in Legionowo.

- The use of appropriate self-defense techniques and knowledge of mass event security procedures is especially important for student volunteers of our association. Every year we organize many educational and preventive actions in different places in Warsaw. During them we give advice and examine several hundred people. Unfortunately, recently during one of them in a shopping center in Radom, volunteers were attacked. We hope that such situation will never happen again, but it shows that such trainings are needed. - says Janusz Świeczkowski-Feiz, President of the IFMSA-Poland Warsaw Branch.

In addition to practical skills, course participants learned how to respond in crisis situations and how to resolve potential conflicts. Police officers explained how to behave when faced with an attacker and what to pay attention to when talking to an aggressive person. They also talked about how to manage stress in an attack situation in order to make a constructive defense. Students also learned about mass event security, strategic planning, and how to properly behave during police compact operations. All procedures were presented by the officers with examples of real events. Potential situations were also considered.

- IFMSA's flagship events Health Under Control and A Streetcar Named Desire are coming up. We would like our volunteers to feel confident during them. It is important that they remember that police representatives at such large events are there to support them. And thanks to the training they will know how to properly communicate with officers at the scene. - adds Karolina Stachyra, Vice President for Human Resources of the IFMSA-Poland Warsaw Branch.
