Wind in the sails. Silver and bronze for our sailors!

In another edition of the Academic Championships of Warsaw and Mazovia 2022, AZS WUM Sailing Section won silver in the general classification and a bronze medal in the team classification. - We are very proud because the stakes were high and the conditions were tough - says Julia Szmit, the president and coach of the AZS sailing section and the helmswoman of the crew that won the silver medal.

The championships were held in Zegrzyński Bay. Apart from Julia Szmit in the silver crew there were also Mateusz Safijan and Grzegorz Bienia.- We competed in such a composition for the first time. Last season I competed with Mateusz Safijan and Adam Chmiel, this year Adam was replaced by Grzegorz Bienia - says Julia.

The AZS WUM Sailing Section put up one more crew, consisting of: Michał Szumieluk (helmsman), Julia Hanke and Maria Grabowska. Both teams won bronze in the team competition. The championships were held on Zegrzyński Bay. There were 11 teams from 5 universities: WUM, WAT, PW, AWF, SGH.

All academic sailing championships are held in the Omega class, which is a three-person boat with two sails. - During the last Championships of Warsaw and Mazovia judges managed to run 6 races. Each lasted 30-40 minutes. The conditions were very challenging, the wind speed ranged from 2 to even 5 on the Beaufort scale, and the wind direction was very variable - Julia Szmit reports. - Almost all competitors, just like me, had great racing experience. It was not known until the last moment what the results of the competition would be and until the end we competed at an even level - emphasizes the helmswoman.

Our sailors treated the regatta as another training and test before the upcoming Polish Academic Championships, which will be held May 23-26 in Wilkasy on Lake Niegocin. This is the most important event of the season. MUW will be represented by 3 teams, which is a record number so far. - We are facing 3 days of struggle in a group of about 90 crews from all over Poland, the competition will be tough, that's why we ask the whole University community to cheer and keep their fingers crossed for us - encourages Julia.
