The award for our scientist for a significant contribution to the development of ultrasonography

Piotr Kaszczewski, MD, PhD, from the Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery, UCC MUW, has been awarded the Professor Zdzisław Boroń prize for the best doctoral dissertation in ultrasonography defended between 2016 and 2021. The dissertation, awarded by the Polish Ultrasound Society, concerned the determination of the norms of cerebral blood flow in the population over 65 years of age in Doppler ultrasonography and the assessment of the volume of cerebral blood flow in patients with different degrees of the carotid artery stenosis.

In addition to the determination of blood flow norms for the population over 65 years of age, the study describes the detection of a group of patients, among asymptomatic patients with carotid artery stenosis, in whom intracerebral flow is significantly higher than in healthy people and those with significantly reduced cephalic blood flow.

The dissertation, entitled "Ultrasound assessment of flow hemodynamics in patients with carotid artery stenosis," was supervised by Prof. Zbigniew Gałązka, Head of the Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery, UCC MUW. The Department's studies on volumetric assessment of blood flow may make a significant contribution to the diagnosis of patients with carotid artery stenosis. The results of the study were presented at the world's largest vascular surgery conferences: Veith Symposium in New York and the European Society for Vascular Surgery Annual Meeting.

Piotr Kaszczewski, MD, PhD, is one of 15 people in the world and the only one in Poland who holds the prestigious ultrasound certification from the European Society for Vascular Surgery.
