Inauguration of the academic year in the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine

During the inauguration held on 29 September, the importance of developing Polish science of the unit launched more than 20 years ago was recalled. Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of the MUW, emphasised that the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine, established on 27 October 1997, has been active in the most dynamically developing field of medicine from the very beginning. The establishment of the postgraduate school provided young researchers with a guarantee of optimal conditions for scientific development and the opportunity to cooperate with national and international centres in the implementation of innovative research projects. The Rector emphasised that since the establishment, the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine has educated 173 graduates, passionate people, who have become the scientific elite of our country.

As a result of changes following the entry into force of the Law on Higher Education and Science, doctoral training was transferred to the Doctoral School at the University of Medical Sciences. As a result of the introduction of new regulations, there was a need to terminate, and consequently to close, the Medical School, which should finally take place on 30 September 2022. prof. Bożena Kamińska-Kaczmarek, Director of the Department of Molecular Medicine who was presiding over the ceremony, when recalling people, who had been involved in the unit’s work over the years, thanked, among others, prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, prof. Jacek Malejczyk and prof. Paweł Włodarski, also present at the inauguration ceremony, for their help and support during the 24 years of the operation of the Postgraduate School.

During the ceremony, diplomas were conferred on 24 of this year’s Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine graduates. People who made outstanding presentations during the last reporting session were also honoured. The awards received by: Mateusz Gielata, Aleksandra Olszewska and Keerthiraju Ethiraju Ravichandran, while distinctions were received by: Katarzyna Bazydło-Guzenda, Eugeniusz Tralle, Magda Markowska and Kinga Wilkus.

The lecture entitled “Epigenetic basis of neuropsychiatric diseases risks: many lives, one master” will be delivered by dr Ali Jawaid - specialist in neuroscience, graduate of the Aga Khan University in Pakistan, Baylor College of Medicine in the USA, and the University of Zurich, associated with the M. Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Texas Health Science Center in Huston, USA.

Since 1997, the Study of Molecular Medicine has been headed by prof. Jacek Malejczyk, Department of Histology and Embryology, MUW (1997-2003), prof. Liliana Konarska, Department of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry, MUW (2003-2008), and since 2008 by prof. Bożena Kamińska-Kaczmarek, M. Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Scientific and Programme Board of the Postgraduate School of Molecular Medicine is chaired by prof. Leszek Kaczmarek, M. Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1997-2005), prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Department of Internal Medicine, Hypertension and Angiology, MUW (2006-2020), and from 2020 by prof. Jacek Malejczyk.
