Diplomas for new habilitated doctors and doctors

The Rector of the MUW prof. Zbigniew Gaciong handed over the diplomas certifying the attainment of the first or subsequent academic degree in the discipline of medical sciences or discipline of pharmaceutical sciences to more than a hundred people. Tuesday's meeting was the first event at our University prepared by the Vice-Rector for Science and Technology Transfer, Professor Piotr Pruszczyk, and the Department for Scientific and Doctoral Student Council.

- I would like to congratulate you - the new habilitated doctors and doctors - for your determination to, despite the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic, successfully complete your dissertation or postdoctoral proceedings - said the rector of the MUW, prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, thanking everyone involved in the process finished with the awarding of the academic degree.

During the ceremony, the diplomas were presented to the researchers who were awarded postdoctoral or doctoral degrees by the Medical Sciences Discipline Council and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Discipline Council between October 2020 and June 2021. Among those promoted were: 16 habilitated doctors  in medical and health sciences in the discipline of medical sciences, 94 doctors  in medical and health sciences in the discipline of medical sciences, and 10 doctors in medical and health sciences in the discipline of pharmaceutical sciences.

- At this point, I would like to congratulate all the members of the Medical Sciences Discipline Council and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Discipline Council for their excellent work, which has resulted in the promotion of the next generation of scientists- said Professor Piotr Pruszczyk, who chaired the meeting, reminding that: - The Constitution for Science has fundamentally changed the model of doctoral education. It also proposed a new rules for awarding doctoral and postdoctoral degrees.  From now on, they could be granted by the university senate or a body designated in the statute of the university. According to the Statute of the Medical University of Warsaw, three newly established Scientific Discipline Councils have become the proper unit to award academic degrees at our University.

The ongoing term of the Academic Discipline Councils began January 1, 2021, and will finish December 31, 2024. The Medical Sciences Discipline Council is chaired by Prof. Hanna Szajewska, the vice-chair is Prof. Marta Struga. The Pharmaceutical Sciences Discipline Council  is chaired by Prof. Grzegorz Nałęcz-Jawecki and the vice-chair is Maciej Dawidowski, MD, PhD.

The ceremony, organized in a hybrid form, was attended by the members of the rector's and deans' authorities, Scientific Discipline Councils, as well as dissertation supervisors.

Currently in our University in the discipline of medical sciences: 330 persons are conducting doctoral studies under the old rules, 72 persons are conducting doctoral studies under the new rules, and 21 persons are conducting habilitation proceedings. Whereas in the discipline of pharmaceutical sciences: 80 persons are pursuing doctoral studies under the old rules, while 2 persons are undergoing habilitation proceedings. At present, the number of doctoral students in the Doctoral School at MUW is 84, the number of doctoral students in the Study of Molecular Medicine is 71, and the number of doctoral students in the University Doctoral Program is 233.
