Research on strategies to combat post covid multisystemic inflammatory syndrome in children

Our researchers, through the National Agency for Academic Exchange intervention grants, will be involved in the scientific work on understanding the immunology and management of pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with coronavirus infection (PIMS/MIS-C).

The aim of the project, headed by Wojciech Feleszko, MD, PhD, from the Department of Pediatric Pulmonology and Allergy UCC MUW, is to develop, under the auspices of and together with the experts from the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, principles of treatment for  PIMS/MIS-C based on the understanding of immunological mechanisms.

An international team of researchers will prepare a strategy to determine disease mechanisms, diagnostics and treatment options. The researchers will also receive funding to study the immune landscape of the airway mucosa in children with PIMS/MIS-C. It will define the dynamics and essence of immunological phenomena occurring in the respiratory epithelium in the multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Project partners are Franciscus Gasthuis & Vlietland University Hospital in Rotterdam and Leiden University Medical Centre from  the Netherlands.
