The capping ceremony of nursing graduates

On July 14, 2021, in the Auditorium of the Didactic Center, a ceremony of capping the graduates of the bachelor's degree in nursing was held. The ceremony was led by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Mariusz Gujski, MD, PhD, and attended by the Rector of the MUW, Professor Zbigniew Gaciong.

Prof. Janusz Piekarczyk Lecture Hall was filled with the representatives of the authorities of the Medical University of Warsaw: Rector Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Vice Rector for International Relations, Development and Promotion Prof. Paweł Włodarski, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Rafał Krenke, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine Prof. Agnieszka Mielczarek, Chairman of the MUW Scientific Disciplines Council Prof. Bolesław Samoliński, Vice Dean for Nursing of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Łukasz Czyżewski, RN, PhD, Vice Dean for Midwifery of the Faculty of Health Sciences Justyna Teliga-Czajkowska, MD, PhD, and members of the Health Sciences Discipline Council.

The event was also attended by the  Director of the Health Department of the Mazovian Voivodship Office Tomasz Slawatyniec, President of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives Zofia Malas, President of the Warsaw District Chamber of Nurses and Midwives Anna Dudzińska, Deputy Director of the Center of Postgraduate Education for Nurses and Midwives Beata Szlendak, and President of the Management Board of Luxmed Group Anna Rulkiewicz.

Among the invited guests were also: Director of UCC MUW Anna Łukasik, Director for Development and Health Promotion at Holy Family Hospital Dariusz Malczyk, Deputy Director of Nursing at the Duchess Anna Mazowiecka Hospital Marzena Sienicka, Chief nurse at the Żwirki i Wigury location of UCC MUW Bożena Ścieglińska, Chief nurse at the Banacha location of UCC MUW Halina Sęk.

During this year's ceremony, 210 undergraduate nursing students underwent the act of capping. Among them were 198 women and 12 men.
Rector Professor Zbigniew Gaciong began his speech by welcoming all those present in the lecture hall and the viewers of the webcast. He particularly emphasized the importance of the nursing profession in the health care system. "Male and female nurses have been needed all the time. Not just in times of pandemic. (…)We look forward to seeing you. You are much needed in our hospitals” – said Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong.

The Rector pointed out that capping ceremony is a ritual confirming the acquired knowledge and obtaining a diploma, and that the first capping ceremony in Poland took place in 1911 in the Cracow School of Nursing. Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong also noted that this year's ceremony falls on the 100th anniversary of the beginning of professional nursing education in Warsaw. He recalled that in 1921, on the initiative of the authorities of the City of Warsaw, the Warsaw University, of which our university was then a part, and the Ministry of Public Health, the Warsaw School of Nursing was established.  He also mentioned the date of April 19, 1991. - the day of the enactment of the Act that established the self-government of nurses and midwives.

During the ceremony, Tomasz Slawatyniec, director of the Health Department of the Mazovian Voivodship Office, read a letter from Mazovian Voivode Konstanty Radziwill, while Zofia Malas, president of the Supreme Council of Nurses and Midwives, presented Dean Mariusz Gujski, MD, PhD, with a special monograph on the 30th anniversary of the professional nurses and midwives association. Anna Rulkiewicz, President of the Management Board of Luxmed Group, encouraged the graduates to find their own ways of professional development.

Before taking the oath, Vice Dean Łukasz Czyżewski, RN, PhD, noted that the graduation diploma serves primarily to gain the right to practice as a nurse. He emphasized that the knowledge and skills learned during the studies are fleeting, so it is important to start working as soon as possible. The capping of nurses was performed by: dr Beata Dziedzic, dr Karolina Prasek, dr Anna Sadowska, Izabella Krzykwa, MA,  and Agnieszka Nerek, MA. The graduates received a congratulatory diploma in addition to their caps.

During the ceremony, three graduates with the best average scores of their studies were recognized: Angela Malewska (4,74), Agata Magdalena Stachowska (4,38) i Dominika Niewierowska (4,34). The awards were also presented to the most active students. They were given to: Michał Czaplicki, Katarzyna Krzyżanowska and Aleksandra Murawska. They also received gifts from Anna Dudzinska, President of the Warsaw District Chamber of Nurses and Midwives.
