Prof. Marek Krawczyk awarded with Honorary Doctorate by the Jagiellonian University

On June 22nd, Prof. Marek Krawczyk received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. The former Rector of our University from 2008 to 2016 has thus joined the esteemed faculty of prominent figures from the world of science, art and politics appreciated by the oldest university in Poland. The ceremony, which took place in the Hall of Collegium Novum, was presided over by the Rector of Jagiellonian University, Prof. Jacek Popiel.

The Senate of the Jagiellonian University conferred the highest dignity of Doctor Honoris Causa on Prof. Mark Krawczyk for:
•    creating the largest liver transplant center in Poland and one of the largest in Europe,
•    pioneering liver surgery and transplantation of this organ,
•    outstanding scientific achievements, experience, knowledge and organizational skills which make Professor Marek Krawczyk, MD, PhD,  a recognized ambassador of Polish surgery and transplantology in Poland and worldwide,
•    providing surgeons from the Jagiellonian University - Collegium Medicum with opportunities for training and scientific cooperation in the field of liver surgery and transplantation.

The reviewers of the application were Prof. Maria Siemionow from the University of Illinois and Prof. Marian Zembala from the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice. The laudation was given by Prof. Piotr Richter from the Jagiellonian University.
The honoree, addressing the audience, emphasized the importance and significance of the title he received, and also analyzed his professional choices and achievements. He made a solemn promise to the Rector Jacek Popiel that "becoming a member of the academic community of Krakow university he would always do good for the university and act with the idea that this and other universities are the places of pure science pursuing for the truth. He will strive to be a role model for the future generations of researchers and students."

Prof. Marek Krawczyk was accompanied by his family, friends and colleagues. The invitation to the ceremony was accepted, among others, by many distinguished representatives of the academic world. The Medical University of Warsaw was represented by the Rector - Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, the Vice Rector for International Relations, Development and Promotion - Prof. Paweł Włodarski, former Vice Rectors of MUW: Prof. Renata Górska, Prof. Marek Kulus and Prof. Sławomir Nazarewski. Also present were: Prof. Michał Grąt - Head of the Doctoral School, Prof. Ireneusz Nawrot, Prof. Rafał Paluszkiewicz, Prof. Zbigniew Gałązka and the employees of the Department of General, Transplant and Liver Surgery and the former employees of the Dean's Office of the 1st Faculty of Medicine.
