Another MUW-UW micro-grant was awarded

Dr. Natalia Czaplinska, Assistant Professor at the Department of Neonatology, UCC MUW and Dr. Katarzyna Bocian, Associate Professor at the Department of Immunology, Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw received funding in the form of a micro-grant for the implementation of the project entitled "Investigating the usefulness of new laboratory markers for predicting the onset and the course of Necrotizing Enterocolitis".

The aim of the project is to investigate the utility of new laboratory markers (TFF3) for making a faster and more accurate diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm born infants and for predicting the course of the disease.

Necrotizing Enterocolitis is an inflammatory disorder that affects approximately 1 in 1000 live births; however, the incidence of the disease increases significantly in premature and low birth weight infants. The mortality rate for this disease is approximately 15-30%.

As part of the project, newborns hospitalized at the Department of Neonatology UCC MUW will be examined. The micro-grant recipients will test urinary TFF3 levels in preterm infants born less than 33 weeks gestation and hospitalized in the neonatology unit until 2 weeks of age. The next stage of the project will be to compare the results obtained in different groups of newborns: with developed NEC, with developed other diseases e.g. sepsis, Hirschsprung's disease, without other diseases.

After conducting preliminary research, the investigators will apply for a grant in NCN OPUS competition.
