Doctors from MUW’s Central Teaching Hospital First in Poland to Implant a Defibrillator with Bluetooth Remote Monitoring Technology

The implanting of a next generation cardioverter-defibrillator was performed by the I Cardiology Clinic at MUW’s Central Teaching Hospital headed by Prof. Grzegorz Opolski. The device uses Bluetooth technology to transmit data to the patient’s smartphone. There is no need for additional transmitters. The low-energy Bluetooth technology used ensures an adequate level of medical data protection and low battery consumption.

The procedure was performed by Prof. Marcin Grabowski, Dr. Marcin Michalak, MD, Dr. Jakub Kosma Rokicki, Dr Andrzej Zieliński and nurse assistants Dorota Dużyńska and Dorota Świątek. Technical support was provided by Bartosz Małachowski, M. Eng. from the company Abbott.

This was the first such procedure in Poland. It was performed on a patient with chronic heart failure. The patient is the first in Poland to be able to use their smartphone to monitor their health.

In addition to the confirmed benefits of telemonitoring, the new Bluetooth technology is particularly valuable as we struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to this innovation in healthcare, patients with chronic heart failure transmit their data to their doctor through a secure wireless device from anywhere in the world.

Having successfully performed this innovative procedure, MUW’s I Cardiology Clinic joins the elite group of medical centers around the world which offer this cutting-edge cardioverter-defibrillator solution to patients with chronic heart failure.
