Innovative vascular operation of aortic arch aneurysm in the Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery UCK WUM

February 6, 2020 in the Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery in cooperation with the IInd Department of Clinical Radiology and the IInd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy of the Medical University of Warsaw an innovative surgery was carried out, consisting in completely transcutaneous implantation of a new generation of aortic arch stentgraft.

The operation was carried out by the team of: prof. Zbigniew Gałązka, dr  Rafał Maciąg (radiologist), dr Tadeusz Bering (cardioanesthesiologist), in cooperation with prof. Mario Lachat - a world-famous vascular surgeon from the Medical University of Zurich.

This pioneering procedure was performed in a 72-year-old patient who had previously been disqualified by cardiac surgeons from open aneurysmectomy due to very high operational risk. The aneurysm was 8 cm in diameter and included the arteries of the aortic arch. Through percutaneous femoral access, a Nexus stentgraft was inserted into the ascending aorta and brachiocephalic trunk in combination with neuroprotection and rapid ventricular pacing. The endovascular surgery was preceded by a crossover bypass from right to left common carotid artery and obliteration of the left subclavian artery. The postoperative period was uneventful, and control computer angiotomography showed complete exclusion of the aneurysm sac from the circulatory system and normal blood flow in the intracerebral arteries.
Department of General, Endocrine and Vascular Surgery of the Medical University of Warsaw headed by prof. Zbigniew Gałązka is currently a leading center in Poland for the treatment of endovascular aortic aneurysms and atherosclerotic occlusion of arteries
