The fair took place on October 9. As is tradition, it was coordinated by the board of the Student Scientific Society.
“The beginning of the academic year is the best moment to hold this event. We want the interested students to be able to join their chosen student clubs from the very first meeting,” explains Maria Żmijewska, newly elected President of the WUM Student Scientific Society.
It would be impossible to organize the fair without the involvement of student clubs and students themselves, who wanted to share what they do, show others that science is fascinating and needed and that it is what keeps the world constantly evolving. No room at our university would be able to house all of our student clubs, as there are nearly 290 of them! Still, guests at the fair were able to find something to suit their needs, whether it was a club focused on surgery, pharmacy, nutrition or emergency medicine.
Did candidates for club members turn up in droves? Absolutely. For several hours, the corridors at the Didactic Center were swarming with students!
Opportunities for Club Members
One opportunity that comes with membership in a student club is diving deeper into one’s field of interest in medicine, pharmacy or health sciences. But it also offers a chance to check if the area that seems fascinating is indeed the one to pursue in the future. Student clubs offer room for exploration and testing.
Activity in student clubs also helps develop one’s soft skills such as teamwork and communication, which – right after medical expertise – are key in successful treatment and will be especially significant in the future when treating patients, whether at a hospital or a private practice.
Club membership also creates opportunities to meet inspiring people and make new friends.
“We also have the chance to meet or choose a mentor, someone who will guide us in choosing our path, and will show us the prospects for scientific development,” Maria emphasizes.
The greatest challenge in working at a student club is consistency; but for those who have it, being active in the club is an inspiration to come up with new projects and undertake new challenges.
“So don’t be afraid to act, and don’t forget to find joy in what you’re doing”, she adds.
