The latest scientific achievements in nephrology as the subject of a symposium at the MUW

The 22nd edition of the “Warsaw Nephrological Meetings” scientific and training conference has come to a close. The event was organized by the Chair and Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Internal Medicine at MUW. The theme of this year's symposium was “How do we treat patients in the 21st century?” This question was addressed by outstanding experts from Poland and abroad.

“Warsaw Nephrological Meetings” have been an important point on the scientific calendar of the medical community for over two decades. About 200 physicians and students participated in the 22nd edition. The Rector of the MUW, Prof. Rafał Krenke embraced the patronage over the event.

The conference featured a lecture by a special guest, Prof. Lionel Rostaing, an outstanding nephrologist and transplantologist from Grenoble, France, on immunology in kidney transplantation.

What was discussed during the symposium

The conference program included 23 presentations on modern nephrology and other issues. Topics related to palliative care and futile therapy were also raised.

The speakers shared their own clinical experience and the current state of knowledge in the field. The presentations were accompanied by numerous discussions and exchange of views on a holistic approach to treatment. Therefore, the conference participants received a multidimensional picture of modern nephrological treatment.

Prof. Ilona Kurnatowska, a national consultant in the field of internal medicine, was one of the speakers. She talked about specializations in internal medicine and nephrology. Prof. Magdalena Krajewska, a national consultant in the field of nephrology, presented new drug programs in nephrology and prospects for the development of modern treatment methods.

One of the highlights of the program was a lecture on the treatment of vasculitis from an interdisciplinary perspective, presented as a panel discussion. The experts were: Prof. Katarzyna Krzanowska, a nephrologist, Prof. Katarzyna Życińska, an internist and rheumatologist, and Prof. Tadeusz Przybyłowski, a pulmonologist.

The group of speakers also included the president of the Polish Society of Nephrology, Prof. Marcin Adamczak, who presented the four pillars of nephroprotective treatment. The latest directions of nephroprotective treatment were presented by Prof. Andrzej Więcek.

During the symposium, the speakers also tackled the issues of qualification for kidney transplantation and the future of nephrology in the era of artificial intelligence. The topic of AI was presented from two perspectives: the young generation of physicians represented by Abbdulah Zahi Hourani, a doctoral student at the Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Internal Medicine MUW and experienced physicians with many years of experience, represented by Prof. Andrzej Rydzewski.

Futile therapy was discussed by Prof. Wojciech Szczeklik from the Jagiellonian University Medical College.

Voice of MUW experts

Our representatives could not miss the event, especially since the MUW holds a strong position among centers specializing in kidney treatment. Prof. Jolanta Małyszko, the Head of the Chair and Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Internal Medicine and the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the conference, focused on the new recommendations of Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) in the area of IgA nephropathy. She also talked about hyperkalemia in chronic kidney disease. Dr Ewa Wojtaszek from the Chair and Department of Nephrology, Dialysis and Internal Medicine presented practical aspects of hemolytic uremic syndrome. Prof. Tomasz Dzierżanowski, the Head of the Department of Palliative Medicine, talked about palliative therapy, and Dr Paweł Andruszkiewicz, the Head of the 2nd Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care discussed futile therapy in kidney diseases.
