The procedures were performed at the 1st Chair and Department of Cardiology at WUM, headed by Professor Marcin Grabowski. They were carried out in two female patients with severe mitral regurgitation who were at high risk for conventional cardiac surgery and were not candidates for other transcatheter repair techniques.
Who performed the procedures
The interventions, guided by transesophageal echocardiography provided by Dr hab. Piotr Scisło, were performed by the team of operators: Dr. Adam Rdzanek, Professor Zenon Huczek, and Professor Janusz Kochman, with the support of anesthesiologist Dr. Renata Andrzejewska and the entire clinical team, including Dr. Ewa Pędzich, Dr. Ewa Ostrowska, Professor Agnieszka Kapłon-Cieślicka, Dr. Jan Sobieraj, Dr. Adam Piasecki, Professor Mariusz Tomaniak, as well as nurses and technicians Monika Cyran, Grażyna Drozdowska, Agnieszka Popławska, Stanisław Drozdowski, and Katarzyna Michalska.
What makes them innovative
“The Sapien M3 system is a breakthrough device, building on more than 20 years of experience in minimally invasive valve therapies. Available only for a few months, it is the only system that enables a fully transcatheter, non-surgical mitral valve implantation,” said Dr. Adam Rdzanek. “Its introduction into clinical practice opens new therapeutic opportunities for a large group of symptomatic patients who until now had no effective treatment options, due to clinical and anatomical limitations.”
We are leaders in Poland
The recent mitral valve implantation procedures are another in a series of pioneering interventions performed for the first time in this part of Europe. This is the result of the work of the department’s team specializing in the treatment of the most complex patients with mitral and tricuspid valve disease. Thanks to the experience gained in recent years, this team is the only one in Poland capable of applying all the most important forms of transcatheter therapy in this demanding patient group.
