Highest “Excellent” Rating for the Center for Rare Liver Diseases in the 2025 European ERN RARE-LIVER Audit

The Center for Rare Liver Diseases has been operating for nearly 10 years within the Department of Hepatology, Transplantology and Internal Medicine with the Rare Liver Disease Unit at UCK WUM. Since its establishment, the Center has been led by Prof. Piotr Milkiewicz. The Center is part of the European Reference Network (ERN) RARE-LIVER.

The ERN RARE-LIVER network brings together leading clinical and research institutions across European Union countries, working jointly to develop more effective methods for diagnosing and treating patients with rare liver diseases. In compliance with European Commission requirements, every center belonging to the network undergoes regular audits. In the most recent evaluation, our Center’s performance received the highest rating , “Excellent.”

“Audits and annual evaluations are crucial for the functioning of centers within the ERN network. At the same time, they are a demanding process that may ultimately lead to exclusion from the network,” emphasizes Prof. Piotr Milkiewicz. “Our Center achieved an exceptionally high score, placing it among the select group of the top-performing institutions within ERN RARE-LIVER.”

What criteria are considered in the evaluation process?

As part of the detailed evaluation, the activity of participating centers is assessed across multiple areas, including contributions to the development of European clinical guidelines, participation in international registries of patients with rare liver diseases, organization of international scientific conferences, and involvement in the network’s management structures.

ERN RARE-LIVER develops standards of care, supports physicians in managing complex clinical cases, and conducts joint research projects. All these activities are aimed at ensuring that patients with rare liver diseases have access to the highest quality medical care. This is why maintaining high standards among network members is so important.

Knowledge That Shapes Future Treatment Approaches

The scientific potential of physicians from the Department of Hepatology, Transplantology and Internal Medicine with the Rare Liver Disease Unit at WUM, led by Prof. Joanna Raszeja-Wyszomirska, was reflected, among other things, by their strong presence at the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Congress held in Barcelona in May.

During the congress, the clinic team presented seven scientific studies, mainly focused on autoimmune and cholestatic liver diseases. Particularly encouraging was the involvement of clinic’s young physicians, who had a unique opportunity to meet world leaders in hepatology during the event.
The congress also served as an opportunity for representatives of the ERN RARE-LIVER European Reference Network to meet and discuss new directions for the network’s development and future research initiatives.
