First Surgeries Using Versius Robotic System at WUM Department of Pediatric Surgery

Our specialists have already performed two cholecystectomies (gallbladder removals) on children using the Versius robotic system. “We are embarking on a new phase in developing expertise in one of the fastest-growing fields of modern surgery,” said Dr. Patrycja Sosnowska-Sienkiewicz, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery UCK WUM during a meeting marking the introduction of the new technology at the Medical University of Warsaw.

Prior to the program’s launch, a team of surgeons from the Department of Pediatric Surgery underwent specialized, multi-stage training on simulators to ensure the safe and effective use of the system’s full capabilities.

“Robotics does not replace a surgeon’s knowledge or skills. Rather, it expands their capabilities by enhancing precision, ergonomics, and the performance of complex minimally invasive procedures,” emphasized the Head of the Department. “This is particularly important in pediatric surgery, where procedures are performed in a limited operative field and on extremely delicate anatomical structures. The outcomes of these interventions can influence patients’ health and quality of life for years to come. The robotic system allows us to meticulously dissect delicate tissues and perform precise suturing within a confined space. It also enables smaller incisions, improved cosmetic outcomes, and may help reduce postoperative pain and accelerate recovery.”

Versius is a modular robotic platform. Its design allows the number of robotic arms to be tailored to the requirements of a specific procedure. The system can also be integrated into existing hospital infrastructure without the need for major operating room modifications. It features an open console that facilitates eye contact and communication among members of the surgical team while maintaining direct access to the patient throughout the procedure.


This new technology can be used for a wide range of surgical procedures. Surgeons see the greatest potential in specialties that require highly precise reconstruction, such as pediatric urology, selected reconstructive procedures, and abdominal, oncological, and thoracic surgery.

While technology plays an important role, Dr. Patrycja Sosnowska-Sienkiewicz emphasized that robotic surgery is not the optimal solution for every patient or every procedure. Treatment decisions should always be guided by what offers the greatest benefit to the patient.

The event marking the launch of the Versius robotic system at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the UCK WUM took place on August 10. Participants included Dr. Michał Buczyński, Deputy Director for Clinical Care at the Children’s Clinical Hospital (DSK) of the UCK WUM; Prof. Aleksandra Banaszkiewicz, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Head of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at UCK WUM; and Marcin Bruszewski, CEO of Innovaris, the distributor of the Versius robotic system.
