First pediatric impedance planimetry workshop in Poland

Impedance planimetry (EndoFLIP) is an important procedure used to measure the distensibility of the esophageal wall and assess its motility. The method can be used for a number of indications, including motility disorders and esophageal strictures. It is particularly useful in children, in whom traditional diagnostic methods may be difficult or impossible, since the procedure can be performed under general anesthesia.

The originator, organizer, and lead expert of the workshop was Dr. hab. Marcin Banasiuk from the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at UCK WUM, headed by Prof. Aleksandra Banaszkiewicz. The workshop also featured Prof. Leonel Rodriguez from Yale University School of Medicine, one of the world’s leading experts in pediatric motility disorders, who visited Poland for the first time at the invitation of the WUM Department.

The training took place on January 29–30 in the conference room of the Children’s Clinical Hospital of UCK WUM and gathered several dozen physicians from across Poland who are currently beginning to implement impedance planimetry in pediatric patients.

“EndoFLIP is an innovative and versatile method that can also be used intraoperatively to assess the effectiveness of esophageal surgery, for example, in procedures such as myotomy or fundoplication, significantly improving treatment outcomes. It can also be used as a standalone therapeutic procedure for the treatment of esophageal strictures,” explained Dr. hab. Marcin Banasiuk, head of the Gastrointestinal Functional Testing Laboratory at the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition of UCK WUM.

Innovative workshop at UCK WUM

The workshop began with a lecture by Prof. Rodriguez. Next, in the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Laboratory, Dr. hab. Marcin Banasiuk and the expert from the United States examined patients with esophageal motility disorders using EndoFLIP technology. Patients who required intervention immediately underwent appropriate treatment, including esophageal dilation.

The procedures were broadcast live to the conference room, allowing workshop participants to observe them in real time and ask questions to the specialists, gaining new knowledge and practical skills.

Many specialists contributed to organizing the event, both from the Functional Testing Laboratory and the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Laboratory: Dr. hab. Marcin Banasiuk, Dr. Barbara Skowrońska, Dr. Paweł Szyszka, Dr. Łukasz Dembiński, Dr. Katarzyna Karolewska-Bochenek, nurses Beata Winnicka, Dominika Capiga, Julia Kólesza, Julia Kosidło, Natalia Budny, Agnieszka Staszczyszyn, and Ewa Lenarczyk. The anesthesiology team also participated, including Dr. Magda Urban-Lechowicz and nurses Katarzyna Pawlukiewicz and Urszula Kusak. Organizational support was provided by Dr. Michał Buczyński, Deputy Director for Medical Affairs at the Children’s Clinical Hospital of UCK WUM.
