Although for the past six years it has been a medical facility within the structure of the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw, patients still call it simply the hospital on Banacha. From the very first days of its operation, it has been a dynamic medical and scientific center. In addition to providing medical services, it also carries out educational activities, training students of the Faculty of Medicine, future nurses, and other medical personnel.
A center of clinical excellence
The University Clinical Center (UCC) of MUW, which includes the Central Clinical Hospital, is one of the largest hospitals in Poland with the highest reference level. It treats patients in the most difficult health situations, who come here from all over the country.
From its first days of activity, UCC MUW has followed new scientific trends, invested in the most modern diagnostic tools, continuously trained its staff, and ensured the highest standard of treatment and effective patient care.
Top-quality care
The Central Clinical Hospital of UCC MUW covers 85,000 square meters, housing 17 clinics, an admissions department, a central operating block with 21 rooms, 5 specialized units, a hospital pharmacy, and the University Center of Laboratory Medicine.
The hospital has 980 beds and admitted 66,866 patients in 2024 alone.
It also provides outpatient services. The Specialist Outpatient Clinic Banacha operates 25 specialty clinics, which receive more than 147,000 patients annually.
A leader in medical and scientific innovation
The Central Clinical Hospital of UCC MUW is known not only in Poland but also internationally. Its medical and scientific achievements serve as a benchmark for other centers. The hospital stands out significantly in transplantation, innovative neurosurgical methods, the development of minimally invasive interventional cardiology techniques, pioneering approaches in otolaryngology, modern oncology, and the treatment of rare diseases.
A pioneer of modern medicine that changes standards of care
Over the past half-century, dozens of groundbreaking, innovative, first-in-Poland and even world-first operations saving health and life have been carried out here. Many of them at the time marked milestones in medicine that forever changed standards of care and life-saving procedures.
It was here, for example, that the first simultaneous kidney and pancreas transplant in Poland took place (1988), the first laparoscopic gallbladder removal surgery (1992), the first liver transplant from a living adult donor to a living adult recipient (2002), and the first kidney harvest from a living donor using a minimally invasive videoscopic technique (2003).
It was also here that, for the first time in the history of Polish heart transplantation, the OCS Heart (organ care system) was used, which makes it possible to extend the time of heart transport up to 12 hours (2024). In the same year, Poland’s first program of transplanting a split liver into two adult recipients was launched. The hospital on Banacha also hosted world medical premieres, including the simultaneous transplantation of three units of cord blood in a patient with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (2004), as well as bilateral implantation of brainstem implants in the treatment of total deafness in cases of multiple brain tumors (2010). These are only some examples of the achievements of the medical and scientific staff at this institution.
