Agreement on cooperation between MUW and Gdansk University of Technology

The signed agreement will support the joint participation of MUW and GUT scientists in international projects and foster the acquisition of funds for research, development and implementation work. The universities also want to cooperate, among other things, in the area of developing modern technologies to support the progress of medicine. The document was signed on February 20 by Prof. Zbigniew Gaciong, Rector of MUW, and Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdansk University of Technology (GUT).

Entry on the Polish Research Infrastructure Map

As part of the MUW and GUT agreement, the rectors of the two universities are also planning a joint strategic initiative related to participation in the competition for entry on the Polish Research Infrastructure Map. This is an initiative of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which is due to be updated in 2024. The Polish Research Infrastructure Map gathers strategic research infrastructures with the highest potential for scientific excellence and consolidates research potential in areas important to the development of science as well as the country.

Talks on bioinformatics and artificial intelligence

At the meeting during which the agreement was signed, the rectors discussed how to integrate infrastructure and organizational solutions in bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing discipline that deals with the application of data processing techniques in biology and medicine. Integration of infrastructural and organizational solutions would allow efficient and secure acquisition and archiving, as well as exchange and processing of large scientific and clinical databases based on biobanking of human biological material. This would significantly enhance ongoing non-commercial and commercial research in all fields of medicine.

The use of artificial intelligence in medicine was also discussed. Currently, it supports doctors in analyzing radiological images, among other things. Clinical decision support tools also help doctors design therapies based on patient outcomes.

- Artificial intelligence offers tremendous opportunities and benefits to healthcare - says Rector Professor Zbigniew Gaciong, adding: - Today there is no longer any doubt that this technology will become an important part of the healthcare system and will continuously support personalized and targeted medicine.

The meeting was also attended by Prof. Piotr Pruszczyk, Vice Rector for Science and Technology Transfer MUW, Dr. Anna Chróścicka, Head of Clinical Research Support Academic Centre MUW, and Dorota Szubstarska, Director of Scientific and Teaching Projects MUW.
