Tenth anniversary of the WUM Sports and Rehabilitation Center

We celebrated the 10th anniversary of the WUM Sports and Rehabilitation Center (CSR WUM). The event was combined with the annual celebration of Children's Day. Numerous attractions were prepared for the guests, including: family swimming competitions, a water obstacle course, an anniversary cake and yoga classes.

Swimming competition

The event began with a swimming competition in which about 200 participants took part. Children and adolescents could compete individually or in a relay with one of their parents. Younger swimmers (up to 9 years old) competed at a distance of 25 m. Older ones swam 50 m. Relay – 2 x25 m. The style was unrestricted. Family relays were the most popular and, like last year, turned out to be a hit of the competition. All swimmers received medals and diplomas – after all, participation is the most important thing.

Anniversary Celebration

The anniversary celebration began after the sports part. Dr Justyna Teliga-Czajkowska, the representative of the University authorities and the Vice Dean for Midwifery at the Faculty for Health Sciences, spoke about how CSR had changed over the past 10 years.

"Today, the WUM Sports and Rehabilitation Center is primarily an Olympic-size swimming pool. In 2016, the year the centre was opened, it was used by about 600 people per day. Now 1200 people, amateurs and athletes swim here every day. Numerous competitions are held, including swimming competitions ranked as European championships – in water rescue, Polish Championships in swimming, Polish Championships in waterpolo. Although 10 years have passed, it is still the most modern facility in the capital," emphasized the Vice Dean.

What other roles does the Centre play? It is a place where physiotherapy is taught, with 600 students using specialist rooms every academic year. It also conducts numerous studies, for example in the field of the biomechanics of movement. In addition, physical education classes are held for Year 1 students of all faculties – that's about 2,000 people. There is also a unique climbing wall, actually two of them: an indoor one and an outdoor one. The first Polish para-climbing championships were held there.

Acknowledgements and diplomas

The CSR anniversary celebration was a great opportunity to present commemorative diplomas. Such a diploma was received by Grażyna Rabsztyn – an Olympic athlete, multiple world record holder, and current (!) Polish record holder in the 100-meter hurdles (with a time of 12.36 s). From 2009 to 2019, the director of the Center for Olympic Education of the Polish Olympic Committee (POC). From 2018 to 2023 – the chairwoman of the POC Women's Sport Committee. A commemorative diploma with thanks was also received by members of Andrzej Kraśnicki's family – Anna Dzikowska-Kraśnicka with her daughters. Andrzej Kraśnicki (whose commemorative plaque is in the CSR) was a sports activist, the president of the Polish Olympic Committee in 2010-2023, as well as a friend of our university. It was thanks to his support that the CSR project was implemented. The Centre would not have been opened without the involvement of Prof. Marek Krawczyk, the Rector of the WUM in the years 2008-2016, who was a guest of honor at the anniversary celebrations. Diplomas with thanks were awarded by Karolina Skinder, the Head of the CSR WUM.

At the end of the official part, a magnificent anniversary cake was brought out for the youngest guests. Afterwards, you could also use various attractions such as a photo booth, a water obstacle course or cotton candy. Stretching and strengthening yoga classes were held in the CSR dance room. The classes were led by certified instructor Alina Stasiak.
