MUW and Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University sign memorandum of cooperation

The two universities plan to continue their collaboration in the fields of science, research, and education, including academic exchange, joint training programs for teaching and research staff, and the organization of internships. The memorandum was signed by Professor Rafał Krenke, Rector of the Medical University of Warsaw, and Professor Roman Yatsyshyn, Rector of Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University.

Under the memorandum, both parties have committed to exchanging information on educational and curricular development, creating new academic programs, publishing and implementing research findings, jointly organizing scientific conferences, and sharing achievements and experiences in various fields of medicine. They also aim to publish the results of collaborative research conducted by both institutions.

A delegation from Ukraine visited MUW on May 8th. Alongside Rector Prof. Roman Yatsyshyn, the University welcomed Professor Mariia Hryshchuk, Vice-Rector, and Dr. Petro Herycah, Assistant to the Rector. The MUW hosts included: Prof. Rafał Krenke, Rector; Prof. Michał Grąt, Vice-Rector for International Relations, Promotion and Development; Prof. Agnieszka Mielczarek, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine; Assoc. Prof. Łukasz Czyżewski, Vice-Dean for Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences; Lidia Przepióra-Dziewulska, Head of the Office for International Cooperation and Jarosław Kulczycki, Senior Public Relations Specialist.

The Importance of interuniversity cooperation

The collaboration between MUW and Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University began in 2011. As part of the partnership, academic staff from MUW’s Department of Emergency Medical Services in the Faculty of Health Sciences conducted a series of training courses in Ukraine for paramedics, physicians, and nurses. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the onset of full-scale war, cooperation intensified significantly. Specialists from MUW and the Polish Medical Air Rescue Service (LPR) have trained over 1,000 individuals, including Ukrainian instructors, in modern emergency medicine procedures. In total, nearly 5,000 people in Ukraine have acquired new competencies thanks to the support of Polish paramedics. The partnership between MUW and Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University has also resulted in the organization of ten Polish-Ukrainian scientific conferences. Prior to the war, these events were held alternately in Poland and Ukraine. Since 2022, they have been hosted exclusively at MUW, with the participation of representatives from the Ivano-Frankivsk university.

“Our cooperation with Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University is of great importance to MUW,” emphasized Prof. Rafał Krenke. “We constantly feel that Ukraine—and its medical universities—need collaboration with universities in Poland and other European countries. I am convinced that one of our important missions today is to support our colleagues and their students in this endeavor. I also believe that this cooperation will be mutually beneficial, and we plan to develop it further in many areas.”

“Visiting the Medical University of Warsaw is very important to us,” said Prof. Roman Yatsyshyn. “Our country is at war. Many soldiers returning from the front need medical assistance and rehabilitation. Many veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. Many people have lost loved ones, and many have left the country or relocated within Ukraine. We are actively seeking cooperation with European universities because we need to train new medical personnel. We must educate professionals who will live and work in Ukraine. This requires reform of both medical education and the healthcare system. We are looking for partners to carry out joint projects. We are pleased to visit MUW, as we have a long and fruitful history of cooperation with this institution. I sincerely thank all Poles, the Polish academic community, and especially the Medical University of Warsaw for your heartfelt support and friendship.”

Visit to the Medical Simulation Center and the University Dental Center

The Ukrainian delegation toured the University Dental Center, guided by Prof. Agnieszka Mielczarek, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Medicine, and Assoc. Prof. Piotr Regulski, Vice-Dean for International Cooperation and Programs in Dentistry (English division) and Radiologic Technology programs. The visitors also explored the Medical Simulation Center, where its Director, Dr. Marcin Kaczor, presented the center’s activities.

“We discussed how to further develop institutional cooperation, potential joint research projects, and, importantly, how we can support Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University in the field of medical education - especially in simulation-based training. The Ukrainian delegation visited our Medical Simulation Center, and we talked about how our experience might help improve the quality of teaching at their university. We are planning to expand our collaboration with Ivano-Frankivsk into new areas,”  emphasized Prof. Michał Grąt, Vice-Rector for International Relations, Promotion and Development.
