MUW Scientists as Health Visionaries

As it does every year, the editorial board of the WPROST weekly magazine, at the Health Visionaries Gala, gave awards to doctors and scientists who are changing medicine. Among the laureates were Prof. Artur Mamcarz, Head of the 3rd Department of Internal Diseases and Cardiology MUW, and Prof. Jerzy Szaflik, long-time director of the Ophthalmology Hospital MUW.

Prof. Jerzy Szaflik received the Special Award for Life Achievements. The professor has to his credit tens of thousands of ophthalmic surgeries performed. He became famous for introducing new surgical techniques, including minimally invasive surgery (phacoemulsification of cataracts and cataract removal surgery using the femtosecond laser). He is currently involved in two innovative projects on the use of artificial intelligence in glaucoma prevention and detection of early signs of Alzheimer's disease.

Prof. Artur Mamcarz received the title of Visionary in the Public Health category. The award was given for promoting prevention as well as encouraging vaccination and compliance with doctors' recommendations. The professor is the author of numerous scientific, popular science publications and books on healthy lifestyles. By his own example, he encourages patients to be physically active, eat properly and avoid stimulants.
